I am carving my grandfather from memory.

My grandfather was his work. He got up before sunrise most of his life, put on his blue work clothes and produced and delivered bricks all day. He was often dusty, his huge shoes full with sand. He had a temper but could not harm a fly. He failed his driving test at 18 because he drove there with his own car (without license). He had a great voice and liked to sing. Before he died in 2011, he had been in a lot of pain and the hospital had to put cuffs on him so he would not pull out any tubes, which kept him alive. It was one of the most horrible and saddest things I had ever seen. My strong, huge bear of a grandfather chained like an animal. One of his last wishes was for a cup of tropical fruit. His best friend Ernesto brought it to him and watched him eat. Ernesto died only months after my grandfather. I assume they are playing cards somewhere on a cloud.
